Congress Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor has ignited a crucial discussion, pressing the government to introduce statutory changes that would legally cement Indian passports and Aadhaar cards as definitive proofs of citizenship. His strong appeal comes in the wake of a recent statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which specified that a passport's primary function is for international travel, rather than serving as conclusive evidence of an individual's Indian nationality.

This official stance, according to the Thiruvananthapuram MP, has triggered widespread bewilderment and an "untenable legal quandary" for innumerable citizens throughout the country.
